Reading a name across scripts
Tanveer appears in several Roman spellings. A user-contributed entry on Behind the Name presents Tanveer as a transcription of the Urdu form تنویر and links it to Tanvir. Because that entry is submitted by a user, it is a starting point rather than conclusive linguistic scholarship. A separate submitted entry for Arabic Tanwir connects that form with illumination; it should not be assumed to explain every Punjabi name spelled Tanveer. Names can be selected for many reasons, and their Roman spellings do not by themselves determine pronunciation, language, gender or family identity.[1][2]
A film lyricist’s pen name
Rekhta identifies Tanveer as the pen name of Syed Khursheed Ali, known as Tanveer Naqvi. Its profile places his birth and death in Lahore and describes work as a film lyricist before and after Partition, including Urdu and Punjabi films. It names the 1941 film Swami among his early work and lists a poetry collection, Sunahre Sapne. A pen name is a chosen literary identity, not necessarily the name recorded at birth. Rekhta’s profile is a useful route into this individual’s work; it does not tell us why other families choose the name.[3]
A Punjabi literary example
In 2024 The Tribune reported the launch of Ajay Tanveer’s ghazal collection Fatavian De Daur Vich at Guru Nanak Dev University. The report describes his translation work and his connection with Punjabi literature in the United States. It is a report of a particular event, not a complete account of his writing or current residence. In this example Tanveer appears as part of an author’s public name, while the Rekhta record explicitly describes a different person’s pen name. The similarity of the written form does not establish a relationship between them or a single origin for every bearer.[4]
