A surname and a word in names

Toor appears in Punjabi naming as a surname. The Dictionary of American Family Names entry reproduced by Ancestry associates one Punjabi Sikh use with a Jat group. Its brief classification is not a documented family tree for each bearer, and a name alone cannot establish a person’s faith, caste, language or close relationship to another family. Roman spellings may also represent different names or literary choices. Research into an individual family needs full names, places and dated records, together with the family’s own account, rather than a conclusion based only on the final word in a name.[1]

A Punjabi writer

A University of Delhi Punjabi syllabus lists Jive Jawani by Gurpreet Singh Toor as a 2013 work and includes study of its author, themes and literary form. A 2021 interview in Indian Masterminds identifies Gurpreet Singh Toor as a Punjab police officer and discusses his writing, including a book based on Partition-era stories. These sources show one person’s name in educational and literary contexts. A syllabus identifies a text chosen for study; the interview gives the writer’s account of his interests. Neither proves a family connection with other people called Toor.[2][3]

A distinct literary use

Rekhta identifies Toor as the pen name of Urdu poet Krishna Kumar. Its biographical text says he was born in Lahore in 1933, while its header shows Dharamshala; the discrepancy is not resolved here. Its profile lists poetry collections and his work editing the magazine Sarsabz. Here Toor is explicitly described as a chosen literary name, so it should not automatically be treated as an inherited surname. The poet and Gurpreet Singh Toor are separate people; the shared Roman form does not establish a family relationship. Comparing a dictionary entry, a syllabus and a literary profile shows why a name’s role and language matter when reading historical records or searching a catalogue.[4]
