A name and competing explanations
Trehan appears in Punjabi historical naming. The Encyclopedia of Sikhism describes it as a Khatri community name and says its etymology is uncertain, presenting more than one traditional explanation. The Dictionary of American Family Names also records an unrelated Channel Islands use of Trehan. These examples show why the same spelling cannot settle the history of an individual family. A traditional account is valuable evidence of how an origin has been remembered, but it is not by itself proof of an ancient line of descent. Researchers should check family records and locations before connecting different bearers.[1][2]
Guru Angad and Khadur
Punjabi University’s Encyclopedia of Sikhism identifies Guru Angad, the second Sikh Guru, as born Lahina into a Trehan family. Its biography describes his succession to Guru Nanak and his work at Khadur. It also distinguishes versions of the story of his first encounter with Guru Nanak, demonstrating that traditional narratives can differ. These accounts belong to a specific religious and historical context. They do not mean that every person named Trehan can claim a documented family connection to Guru Angad. The biography’s bibliography offers routes into the sources on which such narratives have been based. It also describes the Guru’s compositions preserved in Sikh scripture.[3]
How to investigate a family connection
The encyclopedia associates the community with the Khadur Sahib area. Its account of the name’s origin explicitly presents uncertainty and legends rather than a single verified derivation. A reader can compare that account with the separate biography, keeping its description of community traditions distinct from documented links between named people. To investigate a particular family, begin with relatives whose lives can be placed in time, then compare oral histories with records such as certificates, land documents or migration papers wherever these survive.[1]
