A surname reference

The Dictionary of American Family Names, as reproduced by Ancestry, describes Wadhwa as an Indian surname associated with Punjab and notes that its etymology is unexplained. That is a limited published reference, not evidence that all Wadhwa families have one origin or identity. Different dictionaries may classify names differently, and a surname cannot establish an individual’s religion, caste or ancestry. Follow the spelling a person uses and investigate a particular family through its own records.[1]

A planetary scientist

NASA identifies Meenakshi Wadhwa as a planetary scientist whose research includes early Solar System processes and who has worked on NASA missions. An Arizona university profile records her degrees at Punjab University before her doctorate in the United States. These are specific facts about a person’s education and career. They do not show why her family used the surname or prove a relationship with another Wadhwa. Institutional biographies may be updated, so current appointments should be checked against a dated source.[2][3]

A different public career

Vivek Wadhwa describes himself on his own website as an academic, entrepreneur and author. This is a separate public example from the planetary scientist; their shared surname is not proof of kinship or a shared family story. A person’s professional website is a self-description and may emphasise achievements selected by its author. For a fuller biography, compare it with independent records and the person’s own writing, while keeping the source and date clear.[4]

Tracing a particular family

When looking for Wadhwa in family records, check the original spelling, dates, places and relationships before joining documents. A dictionary’s association with a region can be a useful research lead, but it cannot replace a birth, migration, school or property record. Families have moved within and beyond Punjab, and an individual may identify in more than one way. The two public examples above illustrate distinct careers rather than the range or frequency of the surname.[1]
