A Punjabi folk singer
Radio Pakistan’s 2021 remembrance identifies Alam Lohar as a Punjabi folk singer born in 1928 in the Gujrat district of Punjab. It associates his singing with the chimta, the metal tongs used as a percussion instrument, and names performances of Heer Waris Shah, Saif-ul-Malook and Jugni. The broadcaster reports his death in a road accident in 1979 and burial at Lalamusa. It also records a Pride of Performance award in that year. This short institutional account supplies a dated outline of his career. The written note identifies repertoire; it is not a recording or a complete discography.[1]
Jugni and repertoire
A 2020 essay by Muhammad Awais discusses Lohar in relation to Punjabi songs and narrative performance. It describes Jugni as a form through which singers could respond to situations in their own words, and identifies Saif-ul-Malook and Dharti Panj Daryawan Di among works associated with Lohar. The essay also discusses his use of the chimta and the place of narrative ballads in his repertoire. Its account brings together song titles, performance practice and the writer’s interpretation of Jugni. These are reported descriptions of his work; the linked audio or video performances were not independently reviewed for this entry.[2]
A theatre display
A 2011 Dawn report describes a redesigned folk-theatre display at the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum in Islamabad. The report says the display represented Alam Lohar with a chimta alongside fellow performer Bali Jatti, using figures and a village-scene backdrop to evoke a theatre setting. It attributes the museum’s explanation of folk theatre to Lok Virsa’s director. The report also mentions a proposal for a series of performances; that proposal is not evidence that the series was delivered. The account shows how an institution presented Lohar in relation to Punjabi theatre, while remaining a newspaper description of the display rather than a site visit.[3]
