The Assembly bombing

Batukeshwar Dutt was an Indian anti-colonial activist whose political life connected Delhi and Lahore. In a 1929 press statement, Jawaharlal Nehru discussed Dutt and Bhagat Singh during their hunger strike; an editorial note in the Nehru Archive connects Dutt with the bombing of the Central Legislative Assembly on 8 April that year. The note also records a life sentence and later release. The Assembly was in Delhi, not Lahore. Distinguishing the site of the bombing from the later prison protests helps avoid collapsing separate episodes of the anti-colonial movement into one place.[1]

A prison protest

A Government of India publication reproduces a letter dated 17 June 1929 in which Dutt addresses the superintendent of Lahore Central Jail. The letter explains that he had begun a hunger strike and sets out demands associated with his status as a political prisoner. As a document attributed to a participant, it provides evidence of the case Dutt wanted to make to the authorities. Its claims can be read alongside administrative records and other prisoners’ accounts. The protest concerned prison treatment and connected his individual action with wider collective demands made by people held in colonial custody.[2]

The Lahore proceedings

The colonial ordinance establishing a special tribunal for the Lahore Conspiracy Case names Batukeshwar Dutt among the accused. That official document records the state’s legal framework and allegations; inclusion in a list is not, by itself, proof of guilt or a complete account of the case’s outcome. It shows why Dutt’s story is connected to a larger network of people prosecuted in Lahore. His Assembly conviction, the Lahore proceedings and the prison hunger strike were related but distinct events. Reading the ordinance alongside his own letter and contemporary commentary makes those different kinds of evidence visible.[3]
