Bhera to Lahore and Cambridge
Birbal Sahni was born in 1891 in Bhera, then in Shahpur district of Punjab and now in Pakistan. The International Organisation of Palaeobotany describes his education in Lahore and his later study at Cambridge. His father, Ruchi Ram Sahni, taught chemistry in Lahore and also worked to make science accessible to wider audiences. Birbal’s own field became palaeobotany: the study of fossil plants. After further research in Britain and appointments in India, he joined the University of Lucknow as professor of botany in 1921. His career connected the study of plants with geology and the deep history of the subcontinent.[1]
Reconstructing fossil plants
A retrospective by palaeobotanist T. G. Halle, reproduced by the institute named for Sahni, describes research across several Indian fossil-bearing regions. These included the Salt Range, the Rajmahal Hills and the Deccan intertrappean beds. It recalls the discovery of beds bearing Williamsonia fossils near Amarjola and Sahni’s interest in mapping plant-bearing formations. Such work used preserved plant material to investigate both ancient life and the geological history of the rocks in which fossils occur. The retrospective is a historical assessment of his research; the scientific interpretation of individual fossils may continue to develop.[2]
An institute for palaeobotany
The institution now known as the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences grew out of an institute established in 1946. Its museum preserves fossil heritage and presents exhibitions and educational activities, according to Museums of India. The International Organisation of Palaeobotany’s biography records that the original institute began in the botany department at Lucknow University, with Sahni as honorary director. A foundation stone for a dedicated building was laid in 1949, shortly before his death. The institution’s later name and work should be distinguished from Sahni’s own research during his lifetime.[3]
