A wrestler from Dharmuchak

Dara Singh was born in Dharmuchak village in Amritsar district in November 1928, he recalled in a 2003 Times of India interview. He described wanting to study while helping his family with agricultural work. He described seeing wrestlers at village fairs and developing an ambition to wrestle himself. Singh said that he went to Singapore, earned a living loading drums and began training there with help from friends. These are his personal recollections of childhood and early work, told many years later. They connect a career in professional wrestling to both his Punjabi village and a period of migration.[2]

From wrestling to the screen

In a 2009 interview republished by Hindustan Times after his death, Singh said that he became a professional wrestler in Singapore and was later approached about acting while wrestling in Calcutta. He recalled appearing in Sangdil and said producers made room for him to continue training. Looking back, he explained that earning a living for his family mattered when choosing film work. The interview records his own account of moving between the ring and the screen. It also shows how wrestling and acting could overlap in his working life, rather than being two entirely separate careers.[3]

Writing and parliamentary service

The Rajya Sabha’s 2012 obituary records Singh’s performances in Punjabi and Hindi films, his role as Hanuman in the television series Ramayan, and an acting award for Jagga. It states that he published a Punjabi autobiography, Meri Atmakatha, and served as a nominated member of the upper house from August 2003 to August 2009. The tribute also records his death on 12 July 2012 and lists professional wrestling titles. It is a parliamentary summary of a life in sport, entertainment and public service; his autobiography and parliamentary speeches offer routes to further study of his own views and work.[1]
