Early life in Punjab

Dev Anand was an actor and filmmaker whose early life was connected to several places in undivided Punjab. In a retrospective published by the Academy of the Punjab in North America, Harjap Singh Aujla places his birth in Gharota in the Gurdaspur area and describes family life in Gurdaspur. The article also connects his education and early years with Amritsar and Lahore. These places formed part of a life that later took him to Bombay’s Hindi film industry. Aujla’s essay is a retrospective account, and its geographical descriptions reflect the administrative context it discusses.[1]

Guide and its collaborators

In an account of Guide, Harneet Singh describes Dev Anand’s role as Raju and Waheeda Rehman’s as Rosie. The film drew on a novel by R. K. Narayan and was made for the Navketan banner; Vijay Anand directed the Hindi film after an earlier plan involving Chetan Anand changed. The article discusses decisions behind the production as well as its author’s appreciation of the performances. It provides one route into a collaborative work that brought together a novelist, actors, a director and a film production company. An account of the film should distinguish its Hindi version from the separately made English version.[3]
