Punjab and California

Didar Singh Bains was a Punjabi American farmer and community figure associated with Yuba City, California. The UC Davis Punjabi and Sikh Diaspora Digital Archive identifies his birthplace as Nangal Khurd in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district and says he arrived in the United States in 1958. Its family tribute gives his birth date as 10 January 1939 but says his official birth date was recorded as 20 April 1938. The underlying official record was not inspected here. His story belongs to a wider history of Punjabi migration and farming without representing every migrant’s experience.[1]

A farming business

A Yuba City government publication describes Bains as a peach pioneer and states that he purchased his first farmland in 1962. He became widely known as the ‘Peach King’ for his farming business. The city’s tribute celebrates his local contribution and should be read as such; claims comparing the size of farms worldwide require separate evidence and a specified date. The UC Davis family account describes how farming involved decisions about crops and land. Farming success also depends on the labour of family members, employees and wider agricultural communities, whose contributions deserve attention alongside the owner’s name.[2][1]

Family and community

The UC Davis archive’s profile of Amar Kaur Bains identifies her as Didar Singh Bains’s mother. It says she arrived in California in 1962, helped raise eight children and picked peaches during harvests, and volunteered with other women in the langar hall after the Yuba City gurdwara opened in 1970. This account helps show family and community work behind an enterprise often told through one person’s career. The family-based archive is valuable for relationships and memories, though it reflects the perspective of its contributors; other workers’ accounts and business records would add to the picture.[3]
