Punjab and Vancouver

Harjit Singh Sajjan is a Canadian former politician, military officer and police officer who was born in Punjab, India, and moved to Canada as a child. A 2017 Indian Express profile describes his family’s move to Vancouver and his father’s earlier work in Punjab’s police. These details link his early life to migration between Punjab and British Columbia. They do not define the experience of every Punjabi Canadian family. Accounts published at different times can vary in the detail they give about childhood; his later public roles are documented in Canadian institutional records. The profile says he travelled to Vancouver in 1976 with his mother and older sister, joining his father.[1]

Police and military service

A NATO Parliamentary Assembly biography describes Sajjan as a retired lieutenant-colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces and a former Vancouver police officer. It says he served eleven years with the police and was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kandahar, Afghanistan. The profile describes him as an MP and defence minister: those roles reflect the period when it was prepared, rather than his current status. Its account is an institutional biography, not an independent evaluation of every military operation.[4]

In 2017 he apologised after overstating his own role in Operation Medusa, a 2006 Canadian military operation in Afghanistan. A Canadian Press report records the apology. Military service and later public descriptions of that service are separate matters, and a biography should identify both accurately.[2]

Federal parliamentary roles

The Canadian House of Commons lists Sajjan as the member for Vancouver South from 2015 to 2025 and records his service as minister of national defence from 2015 to 2021. It lists later ministerial responsibilities and states that he is no longer a member of Parliament. The dates distinguish separate periods of service.[3]
