Early activism in Punjab

Harkishan Singh Surjeet was a communist organiser and politician from Punjab. A tribute recorded in the Rajya Sabha places his birth in Jalandhar district in 1916 and describes his participation in anti-colonial politics, the Naujawan Bharat Sabha and the Kirti Kisan Party. It also notes his work in the Punjab peasant movement. A parliamentary obituary is a commemorative source: its account of a career should be read with political writing, contemporary reports and the experiences of other organisers. Spellings of Surjeet’s name and descriptions of his birthplace vary in published accounts, so precise identification matters when using archives.[1]

Organising and Partition

A centenary resolution by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) describes Surjeet’s involvement in the anti-colonial struggle and his election as Punjab State Kisan Sabha secretary in 1938. As a party tribute, it presents his life from the perspective of an organisation he helped lead. Peasant organising involved collective campaigns over land, livelihoods and political rights, with contributions from many local activists.[2]

The Rajya Sabha tribute also describes his efforts during Partition and its aftermath. Comparing a party account with other records helps distinguish political memory from independently corroborated detail and brings other participants into view.[1]

Party leadership and Parliament

Surjeet became general secretary of the CPI(M) in 1992 and held that position until 2005, according to the parliamentary tribute. He served in the Punjab Legislative Assembly and represented Punjab in the Rajya Sabha from 1978 to 1984.[1]

In a 2004 interview he discussed his own political career and national coalition politics. An interview is an opportunity to hear a participant’s interpretation, but recollection is shaped by the moment in which it is given. His public life connected regional agrarian movements with national party negotiations; those arenas should be studied on their own terms as well as through his biography.[3]
