An officer employed by the Lahore state
Jean-Baptiste Ventura was an Italian-born officer who entered Maharaja Ranjit Singh's service after experience in the Napoleonic armies and Persia. Gulcharan Singh's reference account places his arrival at Lahore in 1822 alongside Jean-Francois Allard. It assigns Ventura an important role in organising infantry within the Fauj-i-Khas. Their employment formed part of a wider military organisation; it does not mean the Lahore army consisted only of Europeans or that local officers lacked specialised knowledge.[1]
The same account describes duties extending beyond drill, including frontier administration and receiving visitors to the court. It places his departure after Sher Singh's assassination in 1843. A military appointment could therefore connect training, government and diplomacy, while its political setting changed after Ranjit Singh's death.[1]
A portrait preserves a particular representation
The National Army Museum holds a miniature of Ventura, accession 1961-10-9-15, catalogued as watercolour on ivory by a Company artist at Lahore around 1845. Its biographical description associates him with the fighting at Nowshera in 1823 and notes that he left Punjab before the Anglo-Sikh wars. The approximate portrait date and the subject's career are separate parts of the record: a museum attribution is not proof that he sat in Lahore in that precise year.[2]
The museum labels his birth year 1794, while the encyclopedia gives 1792. That discrepancy is retained rather than resolved by guesswork.[1][2]
Another portrait records his role as donor
A Louvre painting of Ranjit Singh supplies a different documentary connection. Alfred de Dreux's signed oil painting, dated 1838, is registered as INV4096, with LP4403 as another inventory number. Its acquisition history identifies a gift from General Ventura in 1838. This record establishes his role in the painting's collection history; it does not by itself prove that the artist met the Maharaja or that Ventura supplied every detail of the image. Retaining the accession and acquisition information helps distinguish the portrayed ruler, the painter and the donor, instead of turning them into one undifferentiated attribution.[3]
