Kaliyan and recordings

A 2011 Times of India obituary describes Kuldeep Manak as a Punjabi folk singer associated with kaliyan. It reports an early singing engagement alongside Seema in 1968 and names Tere Tilley Ton, Chheti Kar Sarwan Bachcha and Garh Mughlane Dian Naaran among songs connected with him. The report places his birthplace at Jalal in the Bathinda area and records his death in Ludhiana. Other accounts differ on his birth year, so a precise year is not selected here. The obituary is a written account of his career and repertoire, not an independently checked catalogue of recordings.[1]

A lyricist remembers

An Indian Express obituary published in December 2011 includes recollections by lyricist Dev Threekewala, who wrote kaliyan for Manak. Dev recalled a recording made for the film Lambardarni and named other songs in discussing the singer’s work. The report also records a tribute from singer Jazzy B. These first-person memories show professional relationships around Manak’s music, but an obituary recollection should be distinguished from a session log or a recording itself. The film and song mentioned in the report were not viewed or heard for this entry. The report gives the singer’s name as Kuldip Manak.[2]

A Surrey festival in the archive

The South Asian Canadian Digital Archive catalogues photographs described as showing Manak at the eighth Mela Gadri Babiyan Da at Bear Creek Park in Surrey, British Columbia, in 2003. Its entries credit photographer Chandra Bodalia and identify the Professor Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation as the festival organiser. The archive explains the event’s commemorative connection with South Asian migrants, the Komagata Maru and the Ghadar movement. These catalogue descriptions place a named performance in a diaspora setting. They do not establish the full programme or audience response, and the archive’s photographs are not reproduced on this page.[3]
