Poetry and short fiction

A December 2020 Dawn obituary describes Nadir Ali as a Punjabi short-story writer, poet and retired army officer. It lists the story collections Kahani Paraga, Kahani Kara and Kahani Lekha, and the poetry collection Bol Jhoote Te Sache. The report also notes his columns in English-language newspapers and a Waris Shah award from the Pakistan Academy of Letters. These titles offer a starting point for locating the writer’s work in Punjabi. The obituary is a retrospective source and includes an education detail that differs from another published remembrance, so that detail is not resolved here.[1]

Literary gatherings and testimony

In a 2021 remembrance, Punjabi writer Zubair Ahmad discussed Ali’s connections with poet and critic Najm Hosain Syed and the weekly Sangat literary gatherings in Lahore. Ahmad also wrote about Ali’s military service in East Pakistan in 1971 and his later public discussion of that period, including an interview and a talk in Dhaka. These are elements of Ahmad’s account of Ali’s life and testimony, not a complete history of the 1971 war. The article describes literary friendship alongside public recollection, and its interpretations should be distinguished from Ali’s own full interviews and from independent historical research.[2]

A collection in translation

Translator Moazzam Sheikh’s introduction describes encountering Nadir Ali’s Punjabi fiction and later knowing the writer through family and literary conversations. Sheikh identifies Hero and Other Stories as a collection of Ali’s stories translated from Punjabi and published by Weavers Press in 2022. He discusses dreams, memory and people as sources from which he understood some of Ali’s fiction to emerge. That is the translator’s reading and recollection, not a claim that every story was composed in the same way. The introduction was consulted for this entry; the full original stories and translated collection were not reviewed.[3]
