From Patti to anti-colonial politics

Sohan Lal Pathak was an activist associated with the Ghadar movement. A chronology held by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts records his birth at Patti in Punjab on 7 January 1883 and identifies him as a Ghadar leader. Later district boundaries and historical descriptions of places can differ, so Patti provides the clearest geographical anchor here. The chronology is concise: it establishes a few dates and affiliations but does not by itself supply a full account of his life. More evidence is needed about his education and travels.[1]

Burma and execution

The same chronology records Pathak’s execution on 10 February 1916 at Mandalay in Burma, now Myanmar. A historical account of revolutionary activity preserved in the National Virtual Library of India describes Pathak as a Ghadar representative sent from San Francisco to Rangoon, where he sought to spread revolutionary ideas among Indian soldiers. It places his activities within networks reaching beyond Punjab and across the British Empire. The source was written from a particular perspective and should be read alongside colonial records and other scholarship; it cannot stand alone as an exhaustive reconstruction of events or of every person involved.[1][2]

Finding further reading

The Gandhi Smriti Library catalogue lists Vidya Sagar Suri’s Brief biographical sketch of Sohan lal Pathak, published by Punjabi University Press at Patiala in 1968. Punjabi University’s publication catalogue separately lists a work on Pathak by Suri among titles concerning Punjab freedom fighters. A catalogue entry establishes that a work was published and where a copy may be found; it is not a substitute for reading the biography itself. Comparing that study with the chronology, historical accounts and archival records would allow a fuller assessment of Pathak’s activism and the ways it has been remembered.[3][4]
