A poet and teacher
Surjit Patar came from Pattar Kalan in Jalandhar district. His own website records a master’s degree in Punjabi and doctoral work on folklore in Guru Nanak’s bani. It lists Maghi 1945 as his birth and distinguishes that from an official date in April 1944. Keeping both records visible is more accurate than silently choosing one. His publications include Hava Vich Likhay Haraf, Birkh Arz Kare and Lafzan Di Dargah, alongside prose, children’s poems and adapted plays. The range already suggests a career extending beyond one signature lyric or a single public role.[1]
How the private voice met public experience
The Sahitya Akademi’s Punjabi register lists Haneray Vich Sulgadi Varnmala for its 1993 poetry award.[6][7]
Surjit Singh’s study, published in the Journal of Punjab Studies, explains Patar’s popularity through the interaction of lyrical feeling with contemporary reality. It describes the ghazal as a form he renewed in Punjabi, allowing the sensitive individual to confront a world beyond romantic idealisation. The study also examines Aia Nand Kishore, which treats a migrant labourer’s relationship with Punjab and Punjabi with regard, while questioning the abandonment of the language by people leaving for prosperity elsewhere. Here language and belonging emerge through contrasting experiences of movement.[2]
Plays and broadcast histories
Patar’s website documents work for Doordarshan on the history of Punjabi poetry, with subjects including Farid, Nanak, Waris Shah, Bulleh Shah, Amrita Pritam and Shiv Kumar. It also lists programmes about folk forms and songs. These were ways of interpreting a literary inheritance for audiences outside a printed collection.[1]
Adapted plays formed another part of his practice. The Journal of Punjab Studies article identifies work from Lorca, Brecht, Molière and Girish Karnad, and emphasises Patar’s attention to Punjabi idiom in performance. Translation and adaptation therefore sat alongside his original poetry as creative work.[2]
A literary presence at an agricultural university
Punjab Agricultural University identifies Patar as a retired professor of Punjabi and records his Saraswati Samman in 2009 and Padma Shri in 2012. The combination of institution and discipline matters: literary teaching was part of the university’s cultural life alongside its agricultural work.[3]
After his death, that association continued through the Dr Surjit Patar Chair. A university report of an August 2026 event describes teachers and students discussing his writing and presenting poems in his memory. Indian Literature’s 2024 issue also published Nirupama Dutt’s memorial and translations of Homecoming and Bridge. These are specific forms of continued reading, teaching and translation, rather than a claim that all readers understand his work alike.[4][5]
