Sialkot and writing relationships

Umera Ahmad connected her writing with Sialkot in a 2014 interview with Jaskiran Kaur. She described everyday life and the difficulties of relationships as sources of stories, locating her motivation partly in the town from which she came. Writing gave shape to the tensions, problems and changes she observed between people. The interview also records a preference about television form: the prospect of a serial running beyond a hundred episodes troubled her, while a limited run interested her. Her account connects the social situations that prompt a story with the practical question of how long a television narrative should continue.[1]

Developing an idea before a script

In Deborah Cornelious's 2020 interview, Ahmad described a slower process behind Ek Jhoothi Love Story. She said she wrote the script in 2019 after living with its characters for almost three years. The title came first; ideas could develop for a substantial period before she wrote them out. Observation and notes supplied material that could return later in a story. She also described limiting the number of projects she undertook, allowing time for characters and situations to develop. Her stated aim was a humanistic approach, and she said her writing had developed more grey areas over time.[2]

Pitching Dhoop Ki Deewar

Her 2021 conversation with Shaheen Irani follows Dhoop Ki Deewar from an initial novel project to a pitch accepted by Zee. Ahmad connected its concerns with her experience of a border city and her work teaching at an Army Public School. She wanted attention to extend to families affected by conflict and the consequences left with them. She separated her contribution from distribution: pitching the idea was her part, while Zee handled the release. The account establishes her stated project and purpose, without confirming that the planned novel itself was published.[3]
