The gate and the old town
Bhakkar’s district portal describes an earlier walled town with Tavela and Imamanwala gates. It identifies Jinnah Gate as a surviving entrance formerly called King Gate, associating that earlier name with a British deputy commissioner. The account connects an architectural landmark to the town’s administrative past, although it supplies neither a construction inscription nor a dated conservation survey.[1]
The same portal cautions against attaching Humayun’s journey to Bhakkar’s Dilkusha Bagh, distinguishing this Punjab town from Bakhar in Sindh. That warning matters when similar place names carry different histories. The gate’s identification is more securely usable here than an unverified Mughal garden attribution.[1]
A bazaar remembered after Partition
Anjali Gera Roy’s study of Partition memory reproduces a map of Chela Ram’s remembered Bhakkar, drawn by his grandson Satish Kalra. Jinnah Gate and a gurdwara orient its Main Bazaar, where shops and family homes occupy a closely connected space. Grocery, textile and luggage businesses appear in this remembered commercial landscape.[2]
Roy reads the drawing as evidence of kinship, trade and nostalgia. It preserves one family’s way of knowing the town rather than a comprehensive cadastral survey. Her discussion also asks whose lives such maps foreground or overlook. The drawing cannot establish that a whole religious community occupied the same economic position, or that its remembered buildings survive unchanged today.[2]
Thal University and a dated recognition record
A different institutional layer appears on University Road. The Higher Education Commission lists Thal University, Bhakkar as a public university chartered by the Punjab government, with an establishment year of 2022. Its profile gives an explicitly time-limited undergraduate-admissions statement running to June 2024, naming sciences, computing, commerce, Pakistan Studies and business administration.[3]
This is evidence of a university and its documented recognition history, rather than a guarantee about every programme’s current admissions. The accompanying atlas reference follows the named university point embedded in the HEC profile. It marks that institution, not Jinnah Gate, the old bazaar or a boundary around Bhakkar.[3]
