A town and a wider tahsil

Bhulath is a place and the name of a tahsil in Kapurthala district, Punjab, India. The two units should not be confused: a tahsil includes villages and towns beyond the settlement whose name it bears. The district profile lists Bhulath as both a tehsil and a nagar panchayat. That administrative framework is a useful starting point for local research, but boundaries and official units can change, so each record needs a date.[1]

The 2011 census

The district census handbook gives Bhulath tahsil a population of 104,354 in 2011, including 83,690 rural and 20,664 urban residents. It counted 94 inhabited villages and two towns in the tahsil. These figures are for the whole 2011 tahsil, not for Bhulath town alone, and they are not a present-day population estimate. A census snapshot is valuable precisely because its date and geographic unit are explicit; changes in settlement and boundaries need separate evidence.[2]

Landscape and district context

Kapurthala district’s statistical profile describes the tract between the Beas River and the Kali Bein as the Bet. This is a district-level description, so it should not be used to assign every Bhulath village the same landscape. Individual villages need to be studied separately. River systems, agriculture and settlement histories can be studied at a finer scale by combining maps, land records and local testimony with district descriptions.[3]

Researching local heritage

The district administration’s history describes Kapurthala’s former princely state and its later incorporation into modern administrative arrangements. That district history supplies a political setting rather than a substitute for the history of a particular Bhulath family or building. For a more local account, researchers can look for village records, older maps and interviews, recording their dates and speakers. A name shared by a town, tahsil or village is a prompt to check which place a record actually describes.[4]
