Chandra and Bhaga

The Chenab begins where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet at Tandi in the Himalayan district of Lahaul and Spiti. The district administration describes the combined river as Chandrabhaga in its upper course. Its account places the Bhaga’s source at Suraj Tal near the Baralacha Pass and describes snowmelt and seasonal high water in the valley. The Chenab then passes through mountain country before entering the Punjab plains. It is one of the five rivers associated with the name Punjab and belongs to the Indus system. The headwaters show how the river’s geography extends well beyond the plains.[1]

Meeting the Jhelum

In Pakistan’s Punjab, the Jhelum joins the Chenab near Trimmu in Jhang district. An Asian Development Bank project record locates Trimmu Barrage downstream of that meeting and describes a programme to improve Trimmu, Panjnad and Islam barrages. A barrage regulates and diverts water; it is not the same thing as the natural confluence upstream. The project record documents financing and construction activities for particular works, rather than the whole history of irrigation on the river. The confluence links water from the Jhelum catchment with the Chenab’s own Himalayan drainage before the combined flow continues downstream.[2]

Water, land and flood risk

Punjab’s 2021 provincial disaster response plan describes a breaching section at Trimmu headworks and identifies villages that could be affected if it were activated. Such infrastructure supports cultivation but does not eliminate flood risk. Seasonal rainfall, upstream flows and the condition of channels and embankments can affect people and farmland along the river. The plan is a dated account of official disaster planning, not a live flood forecast. For current warnings, readers should consult the relevant authorities. River management has to account for communities and land on both sides of an international boundary as well as the river’s ecology.[3]
