A town near the Ravi

Dera Baba Nanak is a town in Gurdaspur district in Indian Punjab, near the international boundary with Pakistan. A planning document prepared for the area describes the town’s religious and historical importance and records 6,394 residents in the 2011 census. That figure belongs to the census year and should not be presented as a current population estimate. The town lies in a landscape shaped by the Ravi and by the border established during Partition. Its institutions and residents have histories of their own beyond its role as a point of access to a shrine across the boundary.[1]

The Kartarpur Corridor

In 2019 India inaugurated an integrated check post at Dera Baba Nanak as part of the Kartarpur Corridor. The Indian government described the project as connecting Dera Baba Nanak to the international boundary to facilitate visits to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan. The gurdwara across the border is associated with Guru Nanak’s later life. The corridor and the shrine are not in the same town or country, and the opening of the route did not erase the international boundary. The 2019 announcement records the project’s purpose at its inauguration.[2]

Pilgrimage and changing access

The governments of India and Pakistan both publish information about the corridor and the places it connects. Access conditions can change: an Associated Press report in 2025 described restrictions on travel from India and appeals for them to be lifted. That report is a dated snapshot rather than a current travel notice. Pilgrimage is also part of a longer history of devotion and connections across Punjab. Visitors should consult the relevant official authorities for current requirements and operations; local oral histories and gurdwara records can provide additional perspectives on the town’s religious life.[3]
