A temple and tank in Jalandhar
Devi Talab Mandir is a Hindu religious site in Jalandhar, Indian Punjab. The district administration describes the old tank, its renovation and a newer temple in its centre, as well as a Kali temple beside it. A tank and its surrounding buildings can change through repair and rebuilding, so their present appearance should not be assumed to show every earlier phase. The place is important to devotees as a living site of worship. Maps, photographs and accounts of worshippers can each reveal different aspects of its relationship with the city.[1]
Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan
The Tribune describes the association between Devi Talab and the Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan, a gathering of Hindustani classical musicians. Music and religious remembrance have been connected at the festival, while performers and audiences have changed over its long history. A date in an institutional account is a starting point for research, not a substitute for programmes and contemporary reports from individual years. The gathering shows how a religious precinct can also be a place of wider cultural exchange, without making music its only significance.[2]
Researching a living place
India’s 2011 Jalandhar district census handbook identifies Devi Talab Mandir and describes the music gathering in its precincts. A census handbook is a dated official description; it cannot establish today’s visitor numbers or the programme of a future festival. For a fuller history, compare such records with temple accounts, festival programmes, newspaper coverage and interviews. Each source reflects the perspective and purpose of its creator. Religious traditions should be presented respectfully and attributed, while claims about buildings, dates and changes can be checked against documentary and architectural evidence. Visitors should consult current local information for arrangements. Dates and locations in each record make it easier for a later reader to find and compare the evidence.[3]
