A regional name around Chakwal
Dhanni, also written Dhani or Dhann, is a regional name associated with Chakwal in the Potohar area of northern Pakistani Punjab. The Chakwal district administration places Chakwal in the Dhani region and describes its changing administrative status, including becoming a district in 1985. Dhanni is a historical and cultural landscape, not necessarily a fixed boundary identical to a modern district. Different records use different spellings and may refer to different areas, so a source’s date and scope matter.[1]
Names and historical accounts
A Punjab Small Industries Corporation account quotes the 1904 Jhelum district gazetteer describing Chakwal as an administrative centre of the Dhanni country. The same account presents competing explanations for the name Maluki Dhan and the area’s settlement. These are reported traditions and claims, not independently established facts about a single founder. Reading them together shows why local histories require careful attribution: a gazetteer, an administrative narrative and family traditions may preserve different views of the same place.[2]
Cattle and the wider landscape
A Food and Agriculture Organization study connects the name Dhanni with cattle originally identified around Chakwal and describes related animals in nearby areas under other names. It explains that these local varieties were later grouped together as Dhanni. Its historical district names and breed classification should be read in the period in which the study was made; the distribution of a breed is not an exact map of a cultural region. The account nevertheless shows how livestock, trade and regional naming can intersect.[3]
Literary memory
Writing in Dawn, Mushtaq Soofi discusses a book about Dhanni’s Sufi poets and describes Dhanni or Dhann as a traditional name for the Chakwal area. His literary essay also connects the region with stories about the poet Pilu. Such connections are part of a living tradition and deserve careful comparison with manuscripts and other historical evidence. They need not be treated as settled biography in order to show that people have remembered the region through poetry as well as administration and agriculture.[4]
