A railway junction
Dhuri is a town in Sangrur district, Punjab, India. The 1981 district census handbook describes it as a junction for the Ludhiana–Jakhal and Bathinda–Ambala railway lines. It also records a market for agricultural produce and a mandi area associated with the former Patiala State. A railway junction connected the town to other markets and made it a place where people and goods changed routes. The handbook describes a particular period; it is not a current train timetable or a complete record of every community in Dhuri. Railway and market workers are part of this history alongside the infrastructure itself. Markets and routes changed as the region developed, so older descriptions should be read with their dates in mind.[1]
Industry in an earlier census
A table of district events in the 1961 Sangrur census handbook records the opening of a sugar mill at Dhuri in 1954. These entries show how officials recorded changes in industry and infrastructure, but they give little information about the people who worked in the mill or how its opening affected nearby farmers. Other records could add those perspectives. An event listed in a historical census should not be interpreted as proof that the same establishment operates today or under the same name.[2]
Town and surrounding units
Census records distinguish a town from the larger sub-district or tehsil that may share its name. This distinction matters in Dhuri because a town population does not include every village in the surrounding administrative area. Boundaries, municipal status and census classifications can also change, making comparisons across decades more complicated than matching names in a table. The 2011 census catalogue provides a way to locate information by administrative level. Researchers can compare it with earlier directories and maps, checking what each unit included before drawing conclusions about growth, services or the distribution of work. The municipal-town row records 55,225 people in 11,077 households in 2011; it is not a current population estimate.[3]
