Town and district

Garhshankar is a town in Hoshiarpur district, Indian Punjab. The district administration lists it as a subdivision, development block and municipal council. These names refer to different administrative areas: the municipal town is only one part of a wider rural region. The district also publishes separate tehsil and block maps, which help researchers check boundaries when using older records. An administrative listing is useful for locating a place, but the institutions and borders it describes can change; it should be read as a record made at a particular time.[1][2]

An older census description

The 1961 Hoshiarpur district census handbook describes Garhshankar as a tehsil headquarters on the Hoshiarpur–Rupar road and records a town population of 5,976. It repeats an account attributing an earlier fort to a ruler named Shankar Das. The handbook presents that as something said about the town, so it is best treated as a reported tradition rather than an independently dated foundation. A census handbook combines statistical information with historical narrative; those different forms of evidence should be assessed separately. Older descriptions can also reflect the assumptions and vocabulary of their era.[3]

The 2011 town count

The 2011 district census handbook lists 16,955 people in Garhshankar Municipal Council. That figure refers to the municipal area, not the whole tehsil or development block. It is a dated census count, not an estimate of the population today. Comparing it with the 1961 town figure can suggest change over time, but an exact comparison also requires checking whether municipal boundaries and census definitions remained the same. The handbooks provide a starting point for exploring local change; district maps and municipal records can add detail about neighbourhoods, services and the surrounding villages. The handbook also records 3,678 households in the municipal area at that census.[4]
