A shrine at Hasan Abdal
Gurdwara Panja Sahib is at Hasan Abdal in Attock district, Pakistani Punjab. Pakistan’s Department of Archaeology and Museums describes the shrine and its association with Guru Nanak. It records the Sikh belief that a handprint on a rock is connected to the Guru’s visit. A religious tradition is part of the site’s meaning for worshippers; its account should be attributed as belief rather than presented as a claim that archaeological evidence can independently prove. The gurdwara is both a place of active devotion and a historic site, with meanings that extend beyond its architecture.[1]
Stories and the building
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee recounts a tradition of Guru Nanak travelling to Hasan Abdal with Bhai Mardana. Such narratives connect the place to the Guru’s journeys and are preserved through religious storytelling. The Department of Archaeology and Museums also provides a historical description of the shrine’s construction and later work during Sikh rule. The dates of a traditional visit and of a surviving building answer different questions. Researchers can compare written histories, oral accounts and architectural evidence while acknowledging that each has its own purpose and limits.[2]
The 1922 railway event
In 1922, Sikhs at Hasan Abdal tried to provide food to prisoners travelling by train during the gurdwara reform movement. The Indian Express recounts that, when told the train would not stop, people protested on the tracks and two Sikhs died. The event is remembered as Saka Panja Sahib and connects the shrine to the history of langar, service and collective action. A newspaper account provides a later narrative; contemporary records and community histories can be compared for further detail. The event should be understood in its own historical context rather than used to summarise every aspect of the shrine.[3]
