A town in Fazilka district
Jalalabad is a town and subdivision in Fazilka district in Indian Punjab. It should be distinguished from other places called Jalalabad, including the town in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district. The Fazilka district court’s history records the creation of Fazilka district in July 2011 and lists Jalalabad among its subdivisions. Earlier census material placed the area within Firozpur district. Those changing district labels describe administrative history; they do not mean that a place appearing under the old district name was necessarily a different settlement. Check the state, district and date when comparing records.[1]
An older census description
The 1971 Firozpur district census described Jalalabad’s municipal committee and an adjoining area as parts of an urban agglomeration. The handbook distinguishes a town from an outgrowth: the latter was recorded as an extended area rather than a separate town. This distinction is useful when tracing change in the town’s built-up area and reading statistical records. A municipal town, an outgrowth and a wider subdivision have different boundaries. Counts should be compared only after checking which unit and which year each figure describes. The census categories reflect administrative and statistical choices, not a complete account of everyday life in the town.[2]
Markets, roads and planning
A study of Jalalabad’s urban growth examines economic activity since 1991 and treats market forces and government policy as factors in urbanisation. It discusses the town’s position on the Ferozepur–Fazilka road and the role of agro-based industry. A government planning map marks the local planning area, neighbouring settlements, roads and the railway. These sources offer different kinds of evidence: an academic interpretation of growth and an administrative map of a defined area. Neither proves that every planned development was completed. Local records, maps and residents’ accounts can add detail about particular neighbourhoods and how the town relates to surrounding villages.[3][4]
