A rivulet and its towns

Kali Bein is a rivulet in Indian Punjab that flows by Sultanpur Lodhi and other settlements. A Punjab Urban Development Authority planning report describes its course and its importance to the town. Watercourses can serve several purposes at once: they are part of local ecology and drainage, and they can also hold religious and historical meaning. Names and spellings vary across maps and records, so a researcher should check the location before joining evidence from different sources. A historical description of the stream’s course or quality does not by itself establish its condition at a later date.[1]

Sultanpur Lodhi and Sikh tradition

The Kapurthala district administration locates Gurdwara Ber Sahib on the bank of Kali Bein at Sultanpur Lodhi. It describes a tree beside the gurdwara that is traditionally associated with Guru Nanak’s meditation. The site’s significance rests in lived Sikh tradition as well as in the town’s historical landscape. A description of a religious belief should identify it as a tradition, while the location of a building can be checked against maps and local records. Pilgrims and residents may experience the watercourse in different ways; neither perspective exhausts the meaning of the place.[2]

Community work and water quality

Community volunteers have taken part in efforts to clean and maintain Kali Bein. The Indian Express reported a weekly kar sewa initiative involving villages near Sultanpur Lodhi in 2026, describing its organisers’ aim of preserving the watercourse. This is a report of a particular effort and does not establish the water’s safety for drinking or bathing. Water quality requires appropriate tests at identified places and times, including more than a visual inspection. Local participation, municipal wastewater management and monitoring records can be considered together when assessing how the rivulet is cared for over time.[3]
