The Kirana Bar

Kirana Bar is a historical landscape in the Chaj Doab of Pakistani Punjab. The University of Sargodha describes it as lying between the Jhelum and Chenab rivers. This is a broad regional description, not an exact boundary for every historical period. The commissioned name “Kirari Bar” could not be independently verified in the sources consulted. This article therefore replaces that uncertain subject with the documented Kirana Bar; similar spelling alone does not establish that the two names refer to the same place.[1]

A gazetteer and the Kirana hills

A historical Jhang district gazetteer has a section headed Kirana Bar. It describes land around the Kirana hills and distinguishes the bar upland from lower areas near the rivers. Its account reflects the geography and administrative vocabulary of its period, not necessarily the boundaries used today. The gazetteer provides evidence for the name Kirana Bar; it does not establish Kirari Bar as an alternative spelling. Scanned historical texts should be checked against the original page because optical character recognition can distort names. Historical descriptions of land as empty or waste can obscure pastoral use and the people who depended on it. Read them as administrative perspectives alongside other sources.[2]

Cultivation and historical land use

The 1911 Punjab census report places Kirana Bar between the Jhelum and Chenab and discusses changes associated with cultivation. It records a colonial view of the landscape, not a complete history of its inhabitants.[3]

Regional names and further research

A geological paper uses the term Gondal–Kirana Bar for an upland in the central Chaj Doab. Other sources discuss Gondal Bar as a distinct northern tract. These descriptions show why place names and boundaries need to be compared rather than treated as interchangeable. A dated map, local-language spelling, gazetteer entry or local testimony could clarify whether “Kirari Bar” was intended to refer to Kirana or another place. The existing URL is retained from the original commission for continuity.[4]
