A market town
Kotkapura, also spelled Kot Kapura, is a town in Faridkot district, Punjab, India. The 2001 district census handbook describes a regulated agricultural market trading crops including wheat, paddy, cotton and gram. It also lists cotton processing and local crafts, including footwear and woven textiles, as features of the town’s economy at that time. These are historical observations, not a current directory of businesses. Markets link growers and traders with transporters, processing workers and consumers across a wider area. The handbook provides a useful overview, while business records and oral histories can add detail about particular livelihoods.[1]
Railway and road connections
The Kotkapura master plan identifies the town as a railway junction on the Bathinda–Ferozepur section and describes road and rail connections with neighbouring centres. Such links helped make the town a point where people and goods could move between the surrounding agricultural area and other markets. A planning document describes infrastructure and proposals at a particular date, not a live timetable. It also covers a local planning area larger than the municipality. Maps and statistics for that wider area should not be treated as measures of the town alone, and present travel arrangements should be checked separately.[2]
Town and tehsil
The Faridkot district administration lists Kotkapura as a tehsil with revenue circles in the surrounding area. This administrative unit is distinct from the municipal town and from Faridkot district as a whole. Census tables and maps should specify which boundary they use, especially when comparing different years. The town’s history includes more than the movement of commodities: institutions, neighbourhoods, crafts and family networks connect Kotkapura with Faridkot and other places. A district directory identifies offices and units, but records of residents and local organisations are needed to understand how those connections have changed over time.[3]
