An old city and expanding neighbourhoods

Ludhiana is a city as well as the headquarters that gives its district a name. The district administration’s historical account associates its name with Lodi-period settlement at Mir Hota and two named chiefs. That account contains a foundation tradition rather than an excavated sequence. It is safest to preserve the connection as a reported local history instead of claiming that one date securely establishes every aspect of the city’s origin.[1]

The same overview distinguishes older quarters, including Field Ganj, Khud Mohalla and Miller Ganj, from later planned colonies such as Sarabha Nagar and BRS Nagar. This contrast makes urban growth visible at the scale of streets and neighbourhoods. A district boundary does not describe that urban fabric: the city developed through several areas with different layouts, names and histories of occupation.[1]

Making goods and maintaining machinery

The government’s industrial profile, drawing on data around 2010–2011, identifies textile production, clothing, fabricated metal, machinery and transport equipment across Ludhiana district. Its export list includes cycle parts, hand tools, agricultural implements and knitting machinery. These categories show an economy of linked specialisms. They also explain why one nickname or one famous product gives an incomplete picture of the work organised in and around the city.[2]

The profile records industrial areas within Ludhiana alongside sites elsewhere in the district, and distinguishes manufacturing from repair and service enterprises. It describes unregistered production but acknowledges that complete data were unavailable. That limitation matters when reading formal factory totals. Workshops that maintain vehicles or make components belong to industrial history even when an official survey cannot count every workplace or worker with equal confidence.[2]

A city connected to agricultural change

Punjab Agricultural University dates its university establishment to 1962 and formal inauguration to 8 July 1963. Its institutional lineage runs through the agricultural college at Lyallpur, re-established after Partition at Amritsar and moved to Ludhiana in 1949. These are different milestones: the movement of a college, its relocation to a campus, and the creation of a university should not be collapsed into a single founding event.[3]

The university timeline also records its first Kisan Mela in 1967 and the separation of Haryana Agricultural University in 1970. Teaching, research and extension thus made Ludhiana part of agricultural networks beyond its workshops. The atlas marks the Indian Institute of Maize Research headquarters on the PAU campus as a precisely sourced institutional reference. It represents one connection between the city and farming research, rather than the boundary of either city or district.[3][4]
