The junction in a former pupil’s memory
Malakwal’s railway junction appears in Gian Sarup’s recollections of school life before Partition. Writing about Bhera, he remembers early-1940s hockey matches against teams from Miani and Malakwal. The towns were connected through school sport as well as transport. This testimony supplies one person’s remembered network of journeys and encounters, rather than a complete record of every school or competition in the region.[1]
Sarup also recalls young men returning from Lahore colleges who changed from trousers into shalwar-kamiz at Malakwal before taking the Bhera train. The detail makes the junction a place of social transition as well as interchange: travellers adjusted their appearance between college life and home. Its significance lies in the attributed recollection. It should not be generalised into a rule for all passengers, religions or communities, or used to establish the railway’s construction date.[1]
A travelling exhibition stops at the station
An APP dispatch on 16 August 2016 records a different use of the station when the Azadi Train stopped at Malakwal and Bhalwal. Its illuminated floats and scientific, cultural and historical models drew local visitors. At Malakwal, schoolteacher Majeed Khan told the reporter that he had come with his family. He valued the train’s historical and cultural information alongside its attraction for children.[2]
The teacher also described the unusual opportunity for a large public gathering during Independence Day celebrations. His interview shows how a railway platform could briefly become an exhibition and meeting place. The account contains separate testimony from Bhalwal, which should remain attached to that station. Malakwal’s documented contribution is the family visit and the teacher’s assessment of a travelling display, offering a small, dated example of how public history reached a regional town.[2]
A regional passenger connection in 2024
In December 2024 APP reported a revised timetable for the Chenab Express between Lalamusa and Sargodha. The named station sequence included Mandi Bahauddin, Hariah, Malakwal, Banah Mianwala and, farther along, Bhalwal. Malakwal thus appears as part of a passenger corridor joining several settlements, rather than only as a name in an old recollection. The report attributed the change to a railway notification and identified the operating and administrative approval process.[3]
The notification was to take effect on 15 December, with the through journey scheduled from the afternoon into the evening. It documents how service arrangements were communicated at that moment. It does not establish present-day departure times or reliability. Together with the memoir and the exhibition report, it gives the junction a human scale: students changing trains, families visiting displays and passengers relying on connections between neighbouring towns.[3]
