Mukerian in Hoshiarpur
Mukerian is a town in Hoshiarpur district in Indian Punjab. An older Hoshiarpur district gazetteer describes Mukerian as a municipality constituted in 1874, situated north of Dasuya. It also records a local tradition about the town’s eighteenth-century foundation. A gazetteer is a valuable dated source, but its descriptions and colonial administrative categories reflect the time in which it was compiled. A reported tradition of foundation should not be mistaken for independently established proof of its date. The gazetteer records the town as a police subdivision headquarters in its own period.[1]
The Mukerian hydel channel
Punjab State Power Corporation describes the Mukerian Hydel Project as a run-of-river project in Hoshiarpur district, using a channel from the Shah Nehar barrage downstream of Pong Dam on the Beas. The engineering project and Mukerian town are related by location and name but are not the same place. Water infrastructure links electricity generation with the management of river and canal flows over a wider area. The corporation’s project description explains its design; understanding environmental and community effects would also require independent studies, local accounts and records of water releases.[2]
Reading old and new records
The hydel channel is one example of infrastructure in the surrounding district. A project name can refer to an area beyond the town itself. A later official account by Bharat Heavy Electricals describes the commissioning of stage II of the Mukerian hydroelectric project on the canal in Hoshiarpur district. Comparing records from different periods can show how infrastructure and administration changed, provided the date and precise location of each record remain clear. Present-day services and access should be checked with current sources. The BHEL account dates the commissioning of the second generating unit to 2018. BHEL described stage II as an 18-megawatt project comprising two generating units.[3]
