A district headquarters
Nawanshahr is the headquarters town of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district in Indian Punjab. The district administration records that Nawanshahr district was created in 1995 from parts of Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur districts and renamed Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in 2008. The town and the district are different geographic units, although their names have been closely connected. Older records may place Nawanshahr in Jalandhar district. When comparing a census, land record or family document, its date and administrative boundaries are therefore as important as the place name.[1]
Accounts of the town’s name
The 2001 census handbook records more than one explanation for Nawanshahr’s name. One local account links the town to an officer named Nausher Khan; another relates a new settlement to movement from Rahon, while a further explanation connects the name to low-lying land.[2]
The district profile also recounts the Nausher Khan version. Such local accounts preserve traditions but do not, by themselves, settle the town’s origin. The district administration records that its 2008 renaming followed a formal notification on 29 September. Records of the town and district should be read separately, since the town name and the district name have different histories.[1]
A gurdwara and the town
The district’s Punjabi-language account of places of interest dates the local Singh Sabha gurdwara to 1928 and describes the formation of a committee to acquire land and build it. It places that account in the context of the railway station and grain market. The gurdwara is part of the town’s community history as well as a place of worship. The district’s account reflects local institutional memory; other records, including committee papers and contemporary newspapers, could add detail. Railway services and facilities change, so the historical account should not be treated as a current travel timetable. Its description connects the religious institution with the growth of the town’s public life.[3]
