Patti in Majha

Patti is a town in Tarn Taran district in the Majha region of Indian Punjab. Its location and administrative setting have changed in the records: the Imperial Gazetteer described Patti as a town in Kasur tehsil of Lahore district under British rule. It listed the town as the terminus of a railway branch from Amritsar and recorded a population of 8,187 in 1901. Those figures refer to the town as defined at that time. They should not be confused with the population of a wider tehsil or treated as a present-day estimate.[1]

Fort and changing rule

The Tarn Taran district administration describes Patti’s historic fort and links it to eighteenth-century Sikh misl rule. Its account says forces under Diwan Mohkam Chand took the town for Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1811. The district page presents the wall’s demolition as a rumour, so its proposed motive should not be treated as established fact. The earlier Imperial Gazetteer likewise mentions an old fort and reports its use for horse breeding in Ranjit Singh’s time. These sources describe a historic structure, but do not provide a current conservation survey.[2][1]

Reading records across boundaries

The 2011 Census of India records 40,976 people and 7,607 households in Patti Municipal Council. The same table separately lists the much larger Patti subdistrict, which includes surrounding settlements; its total is not the town population. These figures describe the census units used in 2011 and should not be presented as a current estimate. Patti’s railway and fort appear in older records, while later maps and local accounts can help investigate changes in the town’s built environment. For comparison, the subdistrict total was 438,190, including 363,242 counted in rural areas. The spreadsheet identifies town, ward, village and subdistrict rows separately, helping readers avoid substituting one geographic unit for another.[3]
