A wetland on the Sutlej

Ropar Wetland, also called Rupnagar Wetland, is a lake-and-river system on the Sutlej near the Shivalik foothills. Its Ramsar information sheet describes a barrage built in 1952 to divert water for uses including irrigation and drinking supplies. The site was designated a wetland of international importance in 2002. A barrage and the wetland it helped create are related but distinct: the wetland includes habitats used by fish, waterbirds and other animals. Its human uses and ecological functions are both part of the history of this stretch of the Sutlej.[1]

Habitats and livelihoods

The Ramsar annotated list describes Ropar as supporting local and migratory birds, fish and a range of other animals. It also notes the importance of local fisheries and cultivation in the surrounding area. The entry identifies siltation, pollutant inflows and invasive weeds as potential pressures. The list summarises information submitted for the site, much of it from the early 2000s, so its species counts should not be presented as a current census. A wetland can provide both habitat and livelihoods, and changes in water or neighbouring land use can affect those functions together.[2]

Mapping change around Ropar

A remote-sensing study archived by India’s National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research examined changes in land use around Ropar using observations for 2000, 2010 and 2020. Its abstract reports changes in agricultural land, forest cover and mapped water bodies during those years, and recommends management that considers land use, hydrology and ecology together. Satellite classifications depend on the methods and dates used, and they do not replace observations on the ground. The study provides a way to examine the wider catchment rather than treating the wetland as an isolated patch of water. Their analysis used Landsat images and geographic information systems.[3]
