An older name and a fort
Sardulgarh is a town in Mansa district, Punjab, India. The district administration records an earlier name, Rori Dhudal, and associates the place with the former princely state of Patiala and Sardul Singh. It also mentions a Patiala fort used for police offices. The brief account does not establish a complete chronology. Buildings can be repaired and adapted as their uses change, so a structure’s present form may reflect more than one period. [1]
Subdivision and local government
According to the district administration, Sardulgarh became a subdivision in 1993 when tehsil headquarters moved from Jhunir, and its local government was upgraded from a gram panchayat to a nagar panchayat in 1996. Mansa district itself had been formed from Bathinda district in 1992. A town, tehsil and subdivision are different administrative units; changes in one do not necessarily mean that all boundaries changed in the same way. These dates help readers interpret older records, although official directories and current maps should be consulted for subsequent changes. [2]
Town, wards and villages
The 2011 primary census abstract lists Sardulgarh as a sub-district and separately identifies its nagar panchayat and wards. The wider sub-district also includes villages. A population figure for the sub-district therefore cannot be used as if it described the town alone. Census data make it possible to compare places, but each comparison depends on the definitions and boundaries in force at the time. The catalogue is a starting point for finding the relevant tables, rather than a description of everyone’s experience. Local histories and records of agriculture, work and migration can add depth to the numerical picture. The district catalogue contains entries at several geographic levels. Each is intended to describe a particular area at the census date, so researchers should choose the one that matches their question.[3]
The 2011 census counted 19,219 people in Sardulgarh nagar panchayat.[3]
