A town by the Beas
Sri Hargobindpur is a town in Gurdaspur district in Indian Punjab, on the western bank of the Beas. A Punjab planning report locates it in relation to Gurdaspur, Batala and Amritsar and identifies the town’s religious and cultural heritage as part of its planning context. The report was prepared in 2011 and describes the town as understood at that date; it is not a current survey of every site. The river and the surrounding settlements form part of the setting in which the town developed, while administrative and planning boundaries should be checked against the period being studied.[1]
A town in Sikh tradition
Punjabi University’s Encyclopedia of Sikhism associates the founding of Sri Hargobindpur with Guru Hargobind and dates clashes near Ruhela to 1621. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee likewise describes a conflict near the developing town in that year. These accounts relate the town’s early development and an episode of fighting; a date attached to a conflict should not automatically be presented as the date of founding. They are sources on Sikh historical tradition, and their accounts should be read in the context of their purpose and underlying references.[2][3]
The planning report associates Sri Hargobindpur with the later Ramgarhia misl and identifies remains linked to Jassa Singh Ramgarhia. The town’s history includes several periods rather than one founding episode alone.[1]
Guru ki Masjid and preservation
A 2008 Sikh Foundation account describes Guru ki Masjid in Sri Hargobindpur as a seventeenth-century mosque associated with Guru Hargobind and the local Muslim community. It records a first phase of renovation in 1999 and stated that further restoration and transfer work remained at the time. That is a dated preservation account, not confirmation of present ownership or worship arrangements. It illustrates how a building can connect religious history with questions of conservation and community access. Visitors and researchers should consult up-to-date local information and compare historical claims with evidence about the building itself.[4]
