Sunam and its setting
Sunam is a town in Sangrur district in Punjab, India. Its administrative history reaches across boundaries that have changed since independence. The Sangrur district court’s historical account identifies Sunam as a district headquarters within the former princely state of Patiala before Partition. A historical description of Sunam in Patiala State and a present address in Sangrur district are therefore not contradictory: they describe different periods. Courts, district offices and their records offer one route into the town’s past, although official histories cannot by themselves describe all the people who lived and worked there.[1]
Udham Singh and Sunam
Punjabi University’s Shaheed Udham Singh Chair identifies Sunam, then in Patiala State, as the birthplace of Udham Singh in 1899. Its account traces his childhood to the Central Khalsa Orphanage in Amritsar and describes his later journeys and revolutionary activity. In March 1940 he killed Michael O’Dwyer in London; he was tried and executed that July. The university chair sets out a programme for further research into his life, travels, trial and commemoration. Its account is a starting point for investigation, not a substitute for comparing contemporary documents and later historical scholarship.[2]
Memory and the archive
The British Library catalogues an India Office file on Udham Singh’s activities outside India, the killing of O’Dwyer, and the trial, appeal and execution in London. The catalogue identifies the file’s date range as 1936 to 1940. It is an archival description, not the full contents of the documents, and the records themselves should be consulted before drawing detailed conclusions from them. Read with material held in India and accounts of commemoration in Sunam, the file can help connect a local birthplace to a history extending across borders. Official records reflect the perspectives and purposes of their creators.[3]
