An older market and administrative centre
Zira is a town in Ferozepur district in Indian Punjab. An 1883 Ferozpur district gazetteer described Zira on a road between Ferozepur and Ludhiana, with bazaars, a tehsil office, school and dispensary. The colonial compiler reported grain moving to markets outside the town and described an inundation canal and water mills. These observations are a dated administrative snapshot, not a complete picture of the people who lived there. Gazetteers reflect the interests and language of colonial officials and should be read alongside other sources, including local records and histories.[1]
Town and surrounding landscape
The Imperial Gazetteer records Zira town’s 1901 population as 4,001 and dates its municipality to 1867. Its separate entry on the much larger Zira tehsil distinguishes alluvial land near the Sutlej from higher ground farther away. The town and tehsil are different units: the tehsil total includes surrounding settlements and cannot be substituted for the town’s population. Boundaries and methods may also change across censuses. The present Ferozepur district website lists Zira among its subdivisions and tehsils; that administrative listing is a current reference point rather than evidence that historic boundaries have remained fixed.[2][3]
Water, protest and public records
In January 2023, The Indian Express reported that Punjab’s chief minister ordered closure of a distillery and ethanol plant in Zira following a prolonged local protest. Residents and farmers had alleged air and groundwater pollution. A later government-commissioned survey, also reported by the newspaper, found high levels of substances in some water samples. The allegations, sampling findings and questions about causation should be distinguished: a water-quality result by itself does not establish the source of every contaminant. The reports concern a specific dispute in the wider Zira area and should be read alongside official findings and later developments.[4][5]
