A view with a date range

The Cleveland Museum of Art catalogues Samuel Bourne’s View of the City of Lahore Taken from the Roof of the Palace in the Fort as 1863–70. Accession 2024.5.26 is an albumen print in Photographs of Northern India, an album the museum describes as containing fifty photographs. Its published digital image, reproduced here under the museum’s open-access terms, shows a broad courtyard and buildings beyond it; a Bourne 416 marking is visible below. The catalogue’s seven-year range should remain a range. Neither the modern accession number nor the nineteenth-century album title supplies a more exact exposure date for this individual view.[1]

Another viewpoint and reference

Science Museum Group object 1990-5036/16543 is Lahore, from Wazir Khan’s Mosque, dated approximately 1865 and credited to Samuel Bourne. Its record identifies negative 420 and an albumen print mounted on card, formerly part of a nineteenth-century album. The stated 303 by 356 millimetres are overall dimensions, so they should not be silently relabelled as image size. It belongs to the Kodak Collection at the National Science and Media Museum. Record the viewpoint, negative number and institution together: an evocative city title alone is insufficient to identify the particular photographic object being discussed.[2]

A tour volume and a gift

Royal Collection RCIN 2114139 records Government House, Lahore, dated 1875–6 and credited to Bourne and Shepherd. Its recorded image dimensions are 10 by 13.7 centimetres. The albumen photograph belongs to a published volume documenting the Prince of Wales’s Indian tour. The catalogue records the prince’s presentation of that volume to Alexandra at Christmas 1876. These are an object date, an album context and a gift event. None establishes when the building itself was constructed. Keep those distinctions in a caption instead of letting the tour date become an unsupported date for every historical feature pictured.[3]
