Identify the recorded relationship
Puninder Singh’s 2024 anthropology thesis describes donor inscriptions around Harmandir Sahib’s walkway, including supporting columns and paving. He distinguishes names of people remembered from donors’ names, donation amounts and occasional village or military affiliations. These fields record relationships and acts of commemoration; a person named on a panel need not be the person who paid for it. His account also locates Persio-Arabic inscriptions in a covered part of the walkway. A useful research record therefore needs the panel’s position and the roles stated in its wording, rather than treating every visible name as a builder’s signature. These are the researcher’s observations, not a new transcription made for this guide.[1]
Ask what a date commemorates
Raminder Kaur’s field-research essay supplies a dated comparison. She reports a bilingual dedication concerning two entrance structures, associated with Mehar Singh Chadha and Ishar Singh Chadha, carrying 15 February 1950. The inscription concerns a particular act of service and its donors. It is not the foundation date of the Harmandir Sahib. Kaur separately records inscriptions in English and Urdu with dates from the 1930s near the Dukh Bhanjani Beri. These observations show why language, location and the stated purpose of a date belong together in a citation. They do not establish that every panel in one script belongs to the same period or commemorates the same kind of event.[2]
Keep a proposed date provisional
Singh explicitly says the Persio-Arabic inscriptions he discusses lack dates. He proposes a pre-Partition or immediately post-Partition setting through their linguistic context. That remains an inference, not a date read from the stone. He also discusses wear and possible replacement of marble blocks, leaving uncertainty about what survives from earlier arrangements. Retain the observation, proposed chronology and preservation concern separately when citing this account.[1]
