Poetry and a disciple’s recorded teachings are different sources

Beacon Books describes The Teachings and Poems of Khwaja Ghulam Farid as bringing together two kinds of material. The teachings were recorded by the disciple Rukn ud-Din, while the poems include the kafi form. Its description locates Farid in Chacharan and the former Bahawalpur state and identifies the poetry’s local language as Siraiki. This language description belongs in a guide that includes the work within a wider regional reading room; it should not be replaced by an assumption about every reader’s identity. The publisher places the book third in its Malfuzat series and names Christopher Shackle in the accompanying description.[1]

A translated divan has a separate bibliographic identity

The National Library of Pakistan’s 2009 bibliography records The Message of Diwan-i-Farid, translated by Shahzad Qaiser and published by Suhail Academy in Lahore in 2009. It gives 667 pages, ISBN 9695191750 and identifierCE 60106 under Siraiki Sufi poetry translated into English. Immediately below is Qaiser’s separate 310-page The Metaphysics of Khawaja Ghulam Farid, CE 60107. Keep those titles apart: an interpretative study and a translation are different research objects, even when the same scholar and publisher are involved. The national bibliography documents publication and deposit/acquisition; it does not supply the books’ complete contents.[2]

A selection record does not redefine the whole corpus

Chughtai Public Library lists Intikhab-i Divan Khvajah Ghulam Farid as serial 8606, with Dilshad Kalanchvi in its main-author field, Urdu Academy in Bahawalpur as publisher and 282 pages. The record labels its language Urdu and directs readers to sign in for online reading. Preserve that edition-specific label while distinguishing it from Beacon’s description of the poetry as Siraiki. Without inspecting the selected text and its introductory pages, the record cannot establish exactly how verse, translation and explanation are arranged. Cite the particular selection and page once examined, rather than treating its short catalogue description as the complete divan.[3]
