Read the language and holdings fields
A familiar title does not establish a newspaper’s language or the extent of its surviving run. The National Archives of Pakistan’s inventory lists Punjabi Gazette under NAP/PR-2-1036, published monthly in Karachi, with November 1953 available and the language recorded as Urdu. Here Punjabi in the title is not a licence to describe the item as Punjabi-language. The same page includes Punjab-related journals, so identify the publication type as well. Note the distinction between the covering period and the separate available-issues column. A year in one field does not promise twelve surviving monthly issues. This guide inspected the inventory, not the periodical itself; retain its archival number when asking for the actual issue.[1]
Check the database and date range
Yale Library’s South Asian newspaper guide supplies another route, listing Punjabi among the languages represented in South Asian Open Archives’ newspaper runs. It also explains why a title search can produce different coverage through different aggregators. The paper, edition, provider and date range need to be checked together. Some listed resources are marked restricted, while others lead to open collections; a public guide does not make every linked database freely accessible. Use the guide to identify a promising collection, then verify the exact title and issue there. No SAOA newspaper scan or subscription database was inspected for this article.[2]
Recognise a translated press summary
Colonial press reports are a different source from the original newspaper page. The National Archives of India describes its Selections of Vernacular Native Newspapers as abstracts or summaries compiled for the Home Department, formerly confidential. Its Punjab holdings appear as a discontinuous sequence of years and supplementary volumes. The inventory does not establish that every original newspaper issue survives alongside the report.[3]
Yale’s description of newspaper reports notes translation by an official translator. Identify that report as the immediate source, then look for the newspaper title and issue it summarises. Selection, translation and administrative purpose are part of the evidence. A translated abstract may help locate a debate, but close reading of an original Punjabi text requires the actual issue.[2]
