Choose a search route that matches the question

SAADA offers several routes through its South Asian American archive: topics, collections, people and organisations, publication sources, material types, languages and states. A Punjab-related enquiry can therefore begin with a place or person, then move into the collection holding the result. These routes answer different questions. A language category locates material described in that language; a collection groups records brought together by a person, family or organisation. Neither should automatically become a list of everyone who identifies as Punjabi.[1]

Work through one documented collection

Abnashi Ram Materials supplies a concrete starting point. SAADA’s collection background connects Ram with Punjab and his migration to the United States in 1920. It describes work in California agriculture and later business activity in Hollywood. The collection description identifies photographs, correspondence and other materials donated by his daughter Raj and her husband Roshan Sharma. Its broad date range is approximately 1923–1979, with much of the correspondence from 1950–1979.[2]

The listed formats include invitations, greeting cards, pamphlets, business material, newspaper clippings and a college transcript. That variety makes several research questions possible, rather than reducing the archive to a single migration story. Before quoting a letter, open its own record and establish creator, recipient, date and access. This guide inspected the collection description and linked listings, not the original correspondence. A catalogue summary should remain distinguishable from a passage actually read in a document.[2]

Use language as a filter, not an identity test

The language index includes English, Punjabi and Urdu as separate categories. Depending on the question, useful material about a Punjab-connected life may appear under more than one of them. Repeating a search across relevant categories is a practical way to avoid equating subject matter with document language. Preserve the collection and item references as you work, and record when only metadata was accessible. A missing result or an inaccessible item does not justify reconstructing its contents from a title.[3]
