A particular competition code
The inspected fourth edition of International Gatka Rules & Regulations is dated June 2025 on its title and imprint, although the shared file’s name says October. Its preface describes stick-fighting between two practitioners, using wooden sticks. Section 6 distinguishes Single Soti and Farri Soti, individual and team events, and freestyle and full-strike categories. Mixed events are also included. The code organises participants into event types rather than treating every appearance of Gatka as the same contest. Its note assigns demonstrations to traditional Virsa Sambhal tournaments and separates them from the school, college and university sports competitions covered by this framework. That is a distinction within this rule body’s system, not a universal prohibition on performing Gatka at educational institutions.[1]
Scheme and centres
A parliamentary answer dated 25 July 2024 describes Gatka within the Khelo India component supporting rural, indigenous and tribal games. It also records inclusion in specified Youth Games. Annexure II identifies training centres at Chandigarh, Jalandhar and Kurukshetra. These are the Ministry’s dated scheme and centre descriptions. They should not be read as a current nationwide list, or confused with the separate annexure’s counts of athletes in adopted akharas.[2]
University-reported performances
The Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University department’s 2023–24 annual report records its team performing at G.G.S. College, Chandigarh, on 20 February 2024 under Talwinder Singh’s guidance. A further entry describes students performing at A.S. College, Khanna, on 1 March. It also records a demonstration at the 23 March Tata IPL stadium inauguration in Mullanpur. The report treats these as performances, alongside separate competitive participation. Elsewhere it describes students serving as officials at Khedan Wattan Punjab Diyan, alongside participation in rugby and Gatka. Students appear as participants in several kinds of organised activity. Its institutional account gives particular dates and settings, without providing a complete script or an independently viewed recording.[3]
