Spin and weave

Spinning and weaving are different operations. The West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board describes a charkha as making yarn from fibres, while a loom holds warp threads for interlacing with weft. Its definition of khadi combines handspun yarn with handweaving. A handloom label alone therefore does not identify how the yarn was produced. This institutional definition concerns an Indian setting; it cannot certify an unidentified piece of cloth.[1]

A production network

In Punjab, Kheti Virasat Mission describes its Trinjan initiative as a network linking farmers and artisans. The project began in four villages in 2017. Its published account follows cotton procurement through handspinning, natural dyeing and handweaving, with embroidery and tailoring adding further work. These stages connect people with different skills, rather than assigning the entire making of a garment to one person.[2]

The project’s stakeholder table makes that division concrete. Spinners receive tools, raw material and training; dyers work on standardising colours; weavers and embroiderers develop designs and check quality; tailors make customised articles. KVM also describes demonstrations, exhibitions and collective gatherings. This is the organisation’s account of its own practice, including work on yarn quality, productivity and marketing. It does not make every Punjabi fabric part of the project or establish that all cloth sold under a familiar name follows this chain.[2]

Changing tools

A different account comes from Imran Rana’s 2016 reporting in Kamalia. Manufacturer Aamir Ali described continued use of traditional tools alongside a shift toward yarn from spinning mills and power looms. Rana also interviewed a trader about the distinction between handloom and machine-made cloth. Their testimony shows why the fabric name khaddar should be read alongside information about spinning and weaving. It documents particular producers and changing tools at that date, rather than fixing one manufacturing method for everything subsequently sold under the name.[3]
