A kitchen and a local support network

Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall’s report for the year ending December 2020 describes volunteer-run kitchens at its two gurdwaras, serving vegetarian food without charge. During coronavirus restrictions, the trustees reported takeaway and delivery services for elderly and vulnerable residents, with Dial-a-Ride staff and vehicles helping deliveries. The account places welfare in practical arrangements: cooking, packing, transport and cooperation with another service. It also records volunteers and food supplied to Help for Southall Street Homeless, and Mael Gael activities intended to counter loneliness. These are the charity’s reports of its activities, rather than a separate evaluation of their effectiveness or a count of Punjabi beneficiaries.[1]

How support became visible outside the congregation

An Ealing community-support listing, updated 16 October 2023, described cooked meals available for collection and delivery to people unable to collect. It explicitly described food available across the community, regardless of background. The listing supplies a dated public route into the gurdwara’s support network. Its stated potential capacity is different from a verified number of meals actually eaten, so it should not be used to calculate the local population receiving help.[2]
