Identify the particular text
Start with a text that can actually be identified, rather than assuming a familiar recording supplies the poet’s complete words. Punjabi-Kavita presents Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s poem under the title Ishtihar. Its opening is associated with the phrase used as the song title Ikk Kudi, but the posted text continues through further verses before returning to the opening refrain. That page is an identifiable digital witness, not an autograph or a dated first edition. Citing its title and location makes a comparison repeatable while leaving the publication history unresolved.[1]
Separate writing, composition and performance
Zee Music Company’s 2018 Sahil Syndicate cover description distinguishes its new performers from the earlier Udta Punjab credits: Batalvi for lyrics, Amit Trivedi for music and Shahid Mallya as singer. Those are different creative roles. A later singer’s name on a track does not make that person the writer of its words, while a poet credit does not make the poet responsible for the later musical arrangement. The label’s credit record identifies attribution; it does not establish a line-by-line match with every published poem text.[2]
Apple Music’s soundtrack listing separately identifies Ikk Kudi, a Reprised Version and a Club Mix, with different performer credits. These labels distinguish recorded versions. They do not, by themselves, establish three different poem texts or explain which words each performance includes.[3]
Check evidence of adaptation
Reported creative decisions can clarify the relationship. Nonika Singh’s anniversary feature quotes lyricist Shellee saying he declined a request to add his own words to Ikk Kudi. The same feature reports a contrasting case: Irshad Kamil elaborated on Batalvi’s opening lines for Ajj Din Chadheya in Love Aaj Kal, according to filmmaker Imtiaz Ali. Such accounts identify different kinds of reuse, rather than one rule for every setting of a poet’s work. Establishing exact omissions, additions or rearrangements would still require comparison with a specified edition and the particular recording. Credits, a posted text and participant testimony answer related questions, but none alone settles the complete textual history.[4]
